In hopes of drawing in more car buyers to Chevrolet, Buick and GMC dealerships, General Motors will now offer a two-year, 30,000-mile standard vehicle maintenance package in conjunction with its Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle program. The program will also include gratuitous oil changes based on the Oil Life Monitor system, tire rotations, and multi-point vehicle inspections.

Used Car Shopping with GOAutoPlus.com: How to Find the Best Used Car

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

GoAutoPlus.com is Wisconsin’s premier auto resource for used cars in Wisconsin. We strive to GoAutoPlus.com, Wisconsin Used Cars, New cars in WIsconsin, New and Used carsmake the car research and purchasing processes as simple as possible for our customers.  Here are a few tips to assist you in finding the right used car for your lifestyle:

The first step in buying a used car is assessing your automotive requirements. Prioritize what you or your family needs in a vehicle.

  • What will the car’s function be? Decide on a vehicle that best fits your lifestyle. Are you an active individual? An on-the-go family? Create a checklist based on your needs and desires and stick to it. Know what you want before you look at the first car.

  • Who will be using the car? And where? Each individual’s lifestyle might require different vehicle features. If you take frequent camping or kayaking trips, you're probably going to need a car with the maximum storage capacity. If this is your child’s first car, you will want a safe and reliable vehicle. If you commute to work, gas mileage and comfort may be your biggest considerations. Also, if you live in state with frequent inclement weather, like Wisconsin, you will want a car with anti-lock brake systems and four-wheel drive.

  • What is your budget? Calculate how much you're willing to spend, how much of a down payment you can make, and how much you can afford per month based on the car’s features that are absolutely vital for your lifestyle.

Now that you have decided on a vehicle type, do your research.

  • Consider the pros and cons of each used car. There are resources available to assist you in the research process, including web sites and dealerships. You can also utilize the dealer and vehicle pages on GOAutoPlus.com to acquire reviews about a specific car or dealership. Gather as much information as you can on the different makes and models to establish the retail value, performance, and track record for repairs.

Next, you can take your desired vehicle out for a test drive. Take as much time as you need. This will give you a chance to thoroughly examine the car.

  • Take an initial glance. Make sure the body parts line up, the paint matches, the doors open and close easily, and the tires show even wear.

  • Look under the hood. Check for leaky hoses, worn belts, and dirty oil. Automatic transmission fluid should be clear and reddish, and shouldn’t smell burned. Radiator water should have a light yellow or green color.

  • Have each safety feature thoroughly examined. Make sure all of the airbags, seatbelts, breaks, warning lights and gauges work. Start the car and check all lights and accessories. Check roof, door, windshield and seat structures and assess the vehicle for child safety seat compatibility. It is also wise to have a trusted mechanic examine and test the vehicle. They have the knowledge and experience to look for elements left unnoticed by the untrained eye.

  • Investigate further. Look for signs of water damage such as water lines in the trunk or engine compartment; mud or dirt under the carpet; water or rust in the spare tire well; and frayed, loose, or brittle wires. Turn on the fan for the heater and air conditioning and see if the air smells like mildew.

  • Test drive time. Take the vehicle up to average speed. Make sure the shifting is smooth and the steering is straight. When braking, a pull to the left or the right could indicate a brake problem. The steering wheel should not shimmy at high speeds (assuring the alignment is straight) and cornering should be smooth.

Finally, find out about the car's past.

  • Obtain a vehicle history report. There are several online sources available to find out the number of owners the car has had and any problems it has had in the past. This, paired with a mechanical inspection, can help you make a more informed buying decision and save you money long-term by helping you avoid problem cars.

You’ve taken the necessary steps to ensure that you’ve found exactly what you were looking for. Now it is time to enjoy your vehicle! Make sure you do your research and remember that GoAutoPlus.com is the best place to find your next new car in Wisconsin or a great pre-owned vehicle in Wisconsin.
